New study shows weight loss surgery significantly reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke
Bariatric surgery has recently been shown in a landmark study to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in diabetics. Even though diabetes is not generally considered a cardiovascular disease, it should be because of the severe effects high blood sugar has on the heart and other blood vessels in the body. The study presented at the 2nd World Congress on Interventional Therapies for Type 2 Diabetes, discusses the results of about 20 years of data that demonstrate weight loss surgery can improve cardiovascular health dramatically. The study compared approximately 2000 patients who had weight loss surgery to approximately 2000 that did not have weight loss surgery but engaged in lifestyle modification from obesity. Strikingly, the rate of heart attack and stroke was decreased 30 percent in those who had weight loss surgery as compared to the group that did not get weight loss surgery. This is an exceedingly important result as over 65 percent of diabetics pass away from cardiovascular disease such as heart attack or stroke as reported by the American Heart Association. Even more remarkable is that 20 years after bariatric surgery, the risk of developing new onset diabetes was decreased an amazing 80 percent in obese patients that had weight loss surgery compared to those that did not. Diabetes has generally been considered a long term life long chronic disease. However, this study showed that a significant number of diabetic patients that underwent weight loss surgery had long-term remission of the diabetes. The American Diabetes Association has also reported this study on its website.
1800GETTHIN has helped thousands of people in their weight loss surgery goals. 1-800-GET-THIN believes that education regarding weight loss surgery is essential to make the right choice. 1-800-GET-THIN believes that weight loss surgery, such as the Lap Band, is not for everyone and as with any procedure, has certain risks. However, for those qualify, weight loss surgery can truly be life-saving. Most scientific studies have shown that diets and exercise alone have had generally disappointing results in the long-term treatment of obesity. Weight loss procedures such as the LapBand have shown generally favorable lasting results in many patients. The Lap Band has so far been performed in approximately 600,000 patients. If you would like to attend an informational Lap Band seminar to see if the Lap Band is right for you or a loved one, please contact 1800 GET THIN.
